Gatherings, they tend to be around maybe the dinner table. So just even asking a simple question, something that you are genuinely curious about, and if you want, instead of writing, you can record. I love that idea my husband's family did that. They collected all the family sayings, particularly from his father, and they put him on to a note pad. It was hysterical. And i think it makes a really great gift idea.
