The first equation is the equation of motion. Whenever we make a ventilator setting change, we are thinking about what impact that change will have on this equation. It provides a good understanding of how we achieve the airway pressure that's displayed on the ventilator. So for example, if a balloon has a narrow neck, it's got more resistance, and therefore you need to generate more pressure to get the volume through. And also, unlike an old and boggy balloon, a brand new and stiff balloon would have less compliance, and hence more pressure is needed to inflate open the balloon.
