Matt Welch: I was reading about how Ramadan has been commercialized like Christmas. He says the idea of Muslims as consumers and companies who have to meet that need is interesting. We live in a kind of late capitalist society, where we're encouraged to have immediate gratification, he says. But it's harder to have the full spiritual impact of Ramadan because our consumption patterns are structured, writes Welch.
