The typical human being in a one hour workout could probably exert a tenth of a horsepower. A Roman tri-reme or quadreme might have anywhere from 200 to 300 rowers. Mongols on horse have 10 times as much power as foot soldiers, right? Why did the Europeans have an advantage when they showed up in the new world versus the Indian tribes? Well, the Europeans had mastered horses, the N is not. It's interesting to apply energy theory again and ask the question, well, what is energy outside of a narrowly defined machine?
