Emma smith is a research fellow in antarctic psysology at the university of leeds. She uses sound waves to scan down through the ice, like you would make an ultra sound measurement in a hospital. So why do you need to be there? There's a really good question, because we can do an awful lot of earth observation from remote sensing nowadays. But what we really need is on the ground measurements to validate.
