In 1971, President Nixon took us off the gold standard. Now we're in this fiat currency system that isn't backed by gold. Every year, the government prints more and more dollars to fund a lot of things. Some of it is not good stuff like wars or whatever, just government spending. So yeah, basically it's because the government printers more money every good.
