The Debate on the Safeguard Mechanism for Australia's Future
I feel like the debate is still back in 2015. Anytime anyone says should an Australia be looking at new fossil fuel projects and how is the safeguard mechanism going to deal with massive fossil fuel expansion, government and industry always say 'you can't stop it overnight' We've had this clarion call from Australian scientists from the IPCC from the UN saying stop extracting fossil fuels but we're still in petty political debates. It's irresponsible to suddenly turn the lights off or shut down coal fire power stations which is just a scare tactic. Successfully tackling climate change requires global cooperation that we cannot afford to open up new coal and gas projects. If the safeguards does not go through then we'll be debating
