Preaching Journals - Do They Worship Me in Vain?

When i was in seminary, i took a preaching class, and i got a s. The professor told me not to turn in those journals because they were late. He said if you spend all writing more preaching journals, your labor will be in vain. I won't even grade them. This is what jesus is saying means when he says, they worship me in vain.
