As many as 36 % of the studiese feal incidental findings that require long term follow up or even intervention. So don't get me wrong, these tests may be warranted, especially when clinic suspicion is high. But due to our over reliance on testing, we may, in many instances, cause more harm than good by detecting abnormalities that the patient may have been better off not knowing about. This is the time to have the conversation with the patient, explain the potential risks and dan sides, and that might actually tip the scale to not ordering the test.
