Economist Steve Levitt used incentives to train his three-year-old daughter. He gave her M&Ms every time she went potty, and it worked for a few days. But then the little girl figured out how to game an incentive scheme that was devised by accountants. "You know you're going to get beaten," Levitt says of such schemes.
