In ancient Egypt there had been 24 hour systems But that number was separated into 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night. In the summer when the sun was above the horizon for longer periods of time The length of an hour at night would be shorter than during the day. It wasn't until the 1300s that hours became standardized to 24 equal increments in a day Building on the greek lunar calendar the roman's developed the roman republican calendar which was adopted around 738 BCE This was a 10 month calendar that was really short just 304 days with another 61.5 days that were just kind of Left hanging to cover the coldest months.
