I was interested in Hinduism and Buddhism because there are all these goddesses, which seemed like a real resource for such a heterosexual mystical life. And so that's what took me to graduate school, and that's why I wrote that dissertation on the life of Ramakrishna who turned out not to be straight at all. So he definitely had this transgendering going on, but that had a very established place in Hindu religion and spirituality. In what sense is this traditional Hinduism? And what sense does this depend on a certain sexual orientation? Can we even tease those things apart at the end of the day?
