The Importance of Improvisation in Music
In the classical world, organists are the only ones that regularly engage in improvisation. improvising on a figured bass is not much different from improvising on chord cymbals. It's basically the same kind of thing. Some people think that improvisation is just making it up on the fly. And that's not what a virtuoso is doing with improvisation.
