Ned Ferryman returns to his family in New England after 25 years. His older brother was a Cromwellian soldier, and he had fled the reign of Charles I. But when James II became king there were fears that it would be an opportunity for rebellion. So Ned sets off on a journey to find out what life is like under new leadership. He finds himself at odds with those who are trying to impose their way of life upon him. It's not long before they come face-to-face again - but this time things go wrong.
