1066: Sailing Into the Storm

Historiansplaining: A historian tells you why everything you know is wrong

CHAPTER

A Novel of the Same Name

Tostig flees northward, up around the coast of england. He tries to land in northumbria and start a kind of counter attack. But it doesn't work, because he was unpopular and had been kicked out as earl of northumbria. So this goes nowhere. In summer is really the only time of year when the weather is clear enough or dry enough to sail across the channel and make a landing. It's autumn and winter, it's just too wet, too stormy. The situation dragged on through august with no change in the wind. And harold finally gives in and disbands the army on september eighth.
