Jean Debs dropped out of high school at age 14 to start working for the Tarahot in Indianapolis Railroad. He saw that as a ticket out, away from to help feed his family, and make his own way in the world. After losing his job in an economic panic, he decided to leaveTarahot in search of work. In East St. Louis, he was shocked by what he found there: real poverty.
