Automatic Methods in Surrealism

Automatic methods were developed out of trans mediumship. Eiffel used them to gain access not just your own subconscious but to a wider world of spirits and energies. In 1949 she writes a piece called The Mantic Stain where she looks very in-depth at a number of automatic methods that she would use. She was using it kind of as a divinatory practice or also perhaps in a magical, in baccatory sense with specific elements depending on what kind of automatic method she was using.
