The Role of Parental Background in Inequality of Opportunity
We can predict half of what people learn as adults just by looking at what their parents earn when they were children. I think America is maybe the only country that can rival us for just how much influence parental background has on people's opportunities in life. We need to redouble our efforts to tackle child poverty, but also look at the school system. The most obvious thing is to target resources on disadvantaged students. Private schools account for just 7% of children go to private schools and dominate the upper echelons of almost every elite profession. And we've been much too reluctant to tackle that issue head on.
