The Evolution of Etruscan Cities in the Villanova Period
From the late 10th century to the end of the 8th century, these collections of related villages sitting on their plateaus and hills above the surrounding valleys were transformed into decent cities. Elites emerged at the top of an increasingly stratified society, marking themselves out from the herd with panoples of bronze weapons and armor. These new cities laid the foundations for what would become powerful city-states in the 7th and 6th centuries BC when Etruscan polities would play a leading role across Italy.
