Yam's book is the first in english to look comprehensively at french spictures. Yam: "I wanted to give a genealogical story, not just a logical one" He says some of those thinkers are incredibly canonical but have been forgotten by most people. But he adds that they're still pretty canonical and can be used as an 'alternative' reading of cannon.
