The Politics of Pretrial Detention
Most people who are engaged in crime are young. And so just from the pure fact that people age out of crime quickly means that locking people up for a long period of time is not preventing any crime by that person. The threat of a long punishment just has no deterrent effect on most people. We can look at the data and be smart about this, yet when people are afraid about their own personal safety, they're like, If there's any chance that anyone could harm my kid, lock them all up.
