The Importance of Being a Jew in Russia

Polly Adler-Madam was born in Yana, a small town in Russia. Her father Moshe had wanderlust and took her to New York City when she was growing up. Jews were banned from leaving the city of Yana unless they worked or studied elsewhere. Polly's mother split her time between helping Moshe with the business and taking care of the family. The Russian government very thoroughly regulated every aspect of a Jewish person's life during this period.
