CHAPTER

Hesiot and the Muses

Hesiot describes nymph-like creatures who are dancing and singing on Mount Helicon. They breathe into him a divine voice so that he can sing of the past and the future. And they then pluck for him a branch of laurel as a sort of symbol of his calling. Uranea simply means a heavenly divinity to Hesiot. There was no such thing as technical specialization in astronomy in the 8th, 7th century BC.
