The American Approach to Teaching Math

In the united states, it was the elete universities that spurred the teaching of higher level math. In 18 20, harvard began requiring knowledge of algebra to gain admittance. 50 years later, harvard added geometry to its require and the secondary schools followed suit. After the soviet union launched in october 19 57, math education became a matter of national security. This led to the introduction of more abstract math in the high schol curriculum. The second goal was develop a work force that could do the complex calculations required to support the military and space efforts.
