Jim Bowie's Bullshit

Colonel Travis complained that his co commander had been roaring drunk all the time and was turning everything topsy-turvy. Bowie's volunteer army turned into a multi-day long keg party, some of his men actually sold their rifles to buy liquor. The fights between the two men soon degenerated into an utterly untenable situation. But then on Valentine's Day, Jim Bowie sobered up and we don't really know why. He might have come to a census or he might have just trade out of ran out of liquor and guns to trade for liquor.
