You have to certainly look at the rules of thumb, but then also start to trust your intuition about what's going to be too much. Once I get to 45 miles a week, how does it feel? Is it too much? And maybe after doing that for a couple of up week cycles, you feel like you can't recover well. You may also decide that you need to pull back at a given time in order to make sure that it all fits together in a way that works.
