The Eddington expedition test was really about just trying to refute Newton's theory. If they had not found the curvature the stars moving like they were, nobody would have thought it refuted Einstein's theory. They would have simply said we don't currently have evidence to refute Newton’s theory. This was actually a positive theory that we proved by actually finding it.
