Vitamin D has been the subject of several claims that have turned out to be false. These health claims usually came from a particular kind of research called an observational study and these are faster and cheaper to do than the most rigorous kind of medical evidence. A big factor affecting your Vitamin D levels is how much you go outside. People who go outside more are likely to be healthier to start with so that's why in the past these observational studies have wrongly suggested that high Vitamin D causes better health.
