The Origins of the Phoenician People

The phoenician people emerged as members of city states on the coast of the levent. There was no evidence of there being a phoenician nation state, just a cultural similarity between neighboring city states. The area came under the influence of the mighty assyrian empire when it was at its heights during the eighth and seventh centuries b c e. It does appear that the phoenician trade abilities and artisanry were somewhat respected and protected in this region. And we are going to spend the rest of the podcast in the classical world, exploring the story of the carthaginians.
