The song was inspired by the chrysalids, a novel by British writer John Windham. The idea that two species can't survive in the same ecological niche is popular in science fiction. Slick and Dryden collaborated with Frank Zapper on an avant-garde track called Would You Like a Snack? They performed at Woodstock before releasing their fifth studio album Volunteers in 1969.
