Hollywood generally looked at all fantasy as being failures until Lord of the Rings. Lucas used to put up money for entire movies out of pocket, so it's kind of surprising that he didn't just double down on his bed after Star Wars. He was hedging his bets against fantasy too. It was a real gamble.
