The Baronial Council and the Reform of Local Government

In 1258 a baronial council simply takes over the government of the country and reduces the king to a cipher. It was partly from pressure from below, you know, the Barons had taken over government - they were in a dangerous situation. But it also takes us, I think, to one of the really unique features of this period, which is its religiosity.
