Is There a Need for Conviction in Politics?
In a world where increasingly people feel disconnected from objective values, that search for conviction can often lead to dead ends or lead to people who are just presenting a front. I think very often people can mistake a particular style of argument or a particular emotional display for having conviction. We use aesthetic stuff as heuristic shortcuts for determining whether somebody has conviction and is authentic. So someone who gets angry in public is the only way they could get that angry if they really cared. And we will later figure out that this facsimile of anger is not based in any reality.
