London consisted of two pieces of higher ground. Saint paul's was built on the westerly one, which is ludgate hill. In norman times, a huge cathedral was built by william the secondon,. Absolutely enormous. And not only is it on high ground, but it also, in the end, had a spire which rose hundreds of feet.
