He hated christianity. He labelled it as a primary source of oppression. Religion, all religion, he wrote, is the opium of the people. And so for communism to prosper, for most types of socialism to prosper, the church needed to be replaced by the state in the hearts and minds of thepeople. It's one of the criticisms of communism. A is that if if the government abolishes god, the government becomes god.
