The Role of Digital Rectal Stimulation in Hiccups

The most common cause of hiccups is basically just an irritation to the diaphragm, which leads to essentially repetitive stimulation of the phrenic nerve. The one treatment option that I do know that stops it is that digital rectal stimulation apparently is the one reliable way to stop it. So again, we'll have to figure out where in the pathway the actual block or lesion is occurring that's causing thephrenic nerve to be repetitively stimulated.
