The Austro-Hungarian Empire was a complex agglomeration of domains in which no single nationality could effectively claim preponderance. Secular world views were gaining greater and greater currency, and they had even been undercut by the aggressive anti-clerical reforms instituted by earlier habsburgs. And nationalism was fostered by new media,. as Benedict Anderson has famously argued that newspapers coming out every week allowed people to reconceive their place in the world.
