The Cost of Healthy Food in Rural and Remote Australia
Eating healthy costs a lot of money. rural and Torres Strait Islander communities living on country know this better than anyone. For First Nations people who live in the hundreds of remote communities dotted across Australia, capitalism and a history of colonisation have combined such that remote Aboriginal citizens are some of the most food insecure people in the country. If you only had $10 or less for a day's worth of food, what would you do? As Andrew Lawrence, a member of the Australian Unemployed Workers Union, told the Senate Inquiry into the extent to nature of poverty in Australia this February: "I wouldn't be able to feed my family."
