Pilots were going between 20 and 24,000 feet. Plane was also doing what are called Dutch rolls because they've lost their control surfaces. They're just on this ride with that they have no control over. So the crew does manage to turn back towards the NATO by manipulating the thrust in the engines with very limited success. The plane descended below 7,000 feet despite their efforts to change direction.
