The Great Value of Tenure Is Academic Freedom
When I was at a small institution, my dean said basically the same thing to me. The great value of tenure is in protecting the faculty from administrators who will use the power of firing them for passing students. If you tell people paying tuition to get out, you might as well shoot your own foot right off. Nobody has ever given me any trouble about things I say in the classroom orThings I say in writing op-eds.
