Earth collided with a huge planetary body about the size of Mars four billion years ago. This collision could have been in many different angles, and almost all of them would have not created a moon. But by chance, this collision was with the right angle, right velocities. All the debris went swirling around and around together, caught up in Earth's gravitational pole. Some scientists argue that there might have been two separate collisions within two days.
