The shepherds also carried a long staff and the staff was used as a walking stick for the shepherd who also used it to maneuver sheep when needed. For further protection, the shepherds often carried a sling comprised of a leather pouch on a string in order to scare off all wound wild animals or threats. They are not these sort of dreamlike gentle hippies that I thought they were like, don't go anywhere, your mum knew it, don't going anywhere near the shepherd.
