This episode of The Dig is brought to you by our listeners who support us at patreon.com and by Haymarket Books, which has loads of great left-wing titles perfect for dig listeners like you. One that you might like is Unbuild Walls, Why Immigrant Justice Needs Abolition by Silky Shaw. Drawing on over 20 years of activism, Silky Shaw dives into US immigration policy in its relationship to mass incarceration over the last 40 years. Showing how the prison industrial complex and immigration enforcement are intertwined systems of repression. Incorporating historical and legal analysis and strategic reflections based on Shaw's experience as an organizer, as well as stories of resistance to detention and deportation, Unbuild Walls, bridges the gaps between movements for immigrant rights, racial justice, and prison abolition. As Dean Spade puts it, anyone interested in social change and in the most pressing questions about social movement tactics needs to read this book. Welcome to the dig, a podcast from Jackabed Magazine. My name is Daniel Denver, and I'm broadcasting from Providence, Rhode Island. Next week, we return to Thawara, our lengthy rolling series on the history of Arab and Palestinian radical politics during the 20th century. We have three final episodes to complete, so stay tuned. This week, we're taking a pause with Dylan Saba and Walid Shaheed to assess how the genocide in Gaza and the mass solidarity movement that's erupted in response is transforming U.S. politics. The movement in solidarity with Palestine marks a profound turning point in American politics, and more specifically for this new, new American left that has emerged over the past decade and a half, and that is now making its solidaristic vision for human liberation a truly universal one. The rise of neoliberalism and then the end of the Cold War had for a long time banished the American left to the wilderness. We did have moments of mass protest from anti-globalization activists in the streets of Seattle through mass anti-war demonstrations on the eve of the Iraq invasion and then enormous migrant rights marches in 2006. But by and large, we, the American left, were small and on the sidelines. Loudly and righteously dissenting against constant losses that seemed as inevitable as the passage of time. Then came Occupy Wall Street in 2011, or even the occupation of the Wisconsin State Capitol earlier that year, protesting Governor Scott Walker's anti-union agenda. What we've seen since over that past decade and a half are these cycles of popular struggle that constantly reemerge. Massive moments of labor movement revitalization from teachers in the UAW to Starbucks and grad students. Insurgent and openly socialist electoral campaigns, anti-deportation activism, mass action over climate and extraction, and huge protest movements against racist police violence.
