Mehmet's army began to assemble in the early months of 1453. Waiting for them were Constantinople's formidable walls, one of the great engineering achievements of the ancient world. Persians, avars, Arabs, bulgars, and now Ottomans had all tried their hand taking the city. Aside from the Crusaders of 1204, none had succeeded.
