There are contiguous threads, the military thread, the congressional thread, and the legal thread about what Confederate slaves are in legal terms. The battle thread is going very badly for the Union in the first year of the war. And you can see Beatty's sort of shocked admiration for this guy who's been reduced to something like a beast of burden but still has enough of his own thought to betray his so-called master.
