The Secret Life of a Young Woman

The narrator vaguely members a rumor of the young woman being an illegitimate child. They arrive at a nice french restaurant that is primarily white, where the man is in a back room drinking a dark red drinks othere's that color contrast. She has some knots, so subtle, digs that he hasn't provided for her while he was living his fancy life. And then later reveals that her mother had wanted to go into music as well, but became a typist instead. Her mother died soon after and she ended up going to school for pastry making.
