The Hourglass Emergence Model
i hope to have a conversation with jessica flak when she gets her papers on the hourglass emergence model published i love. yeah i mean this gets to stuff that i've heard mary tikle lasek talk about with sociophysics and the like visceral revulsion that some people experience trying to model crowds with fluid dynamical approaches right People don't like it for precisely the reasons that you mentioned but there is another dimension in which gene fusion seems to be governed by the same principles as hebbian fire to wire learning in the brain.
