The Collapse of Parenting
Melvin: I just wonder whether you may be overstating the centrality of the workplace. These great changes that you're talking about are lack of stability, the collapse of attachments, the erosion of the nature of commitment and trust. Those things are contemporary phenomena, but it seems to me they're more generally rooted outside work. On the other hand, you don't mention what to me is one of the great changes and very threatening to men, which is the eroded role of the man as breadwinner.
