A lot of SETI scientists were involved in anti nuclear protests. Carl Sagan famously wrote the nuclear winter paper, where he warned about earth becoming inhospitable if we had nuclear war. And I don't think it's a coincidence that you have people who are wrestling with how do we seek out and communicate with life on other worlds? How do we represent our own world? They're looking around at the Cold War period and thinking, yikes.
