Crafting and Sewing in Prison
The charity Fine Cell Work has been helping prisoners with their mental health by getting them sewing. The idea is to rehabilitate prisoners and ex-prisoners by teaching them to stitch handmade products like cushions. They aren't talking any old stitching here, but high quality, elaborate embroidery, needlepoint and quilting. This delicate work helps people to feel calmer, as Victoria Gillies discovered when she went to meet the executive director at their studios in South London.
